When And Where We Fish For Silver Salmon

As a general rule, you’ll find Silver Salmon in the same rivers that you find King Salmon. In fact, they share a lot of the same characteristics and in many ways, are caught using the same techniques and gear. The main difference between Silver Salmon and King Salmon are the size; but the locations, the gear, the bite and the fight are all very similar.

  • We start fishing for Kasilof River Silver Salmon as early as the beginning of August. Generally, we start seeing Silvers on the Kasilof before the Kenai River Silver Salmon show up, but their run timing and run size are very similar. We can catch them all the way until the end of our Alaska Season (mid-September), but the run itself will run into December.
  • After our season is over in Alaska, we move down into Washington and start fishing for Silvers in several of the rivers throughout Washington. Our favorite rivers to target them are the Kalama River, the Hoh River and the Humptulips River. All three are fairly consistent and we can generally catch Washington Silver Salmon all the way into December!

The Gear We Use To Catch Silver Salmon

Fishing rods for Silver Salmon:

  • All of our Silver Salmon rods are made by Stryker Fishing Rods out of Oregon, custom made for RiverRise. The conventional rods are 9′ diver/plug rods and our spinning rods are 10′ 10-20lb float rods. We also use 7′ stiff spinning rods that we use for twitching jigs. Having the right fishing rod is essential when fishing for Silver Salmon!

Fishing reels for Silver Salmon:

  • We use both conventional and spinning reels for Silver Salmon. Our conventional reels are Shimano Tekota 400s with line counters and our spinning reels are all 13 Fishing AL-13 reels.

Fishing line for Silver Salmon:

  • The line that we use for Silver Salmon is all P-Line brand. We use 12-20 pound braided line for our mainline and then we use a 10-20 pound fluorocarbon for our leader.

Baits for Silver Salmon:

  • We fish with several different baits/lures for Silver Salmon; wrapped plugs and cured eggs are the most common. You will also see us throwing twitching jigs and spinners such as purple and blue Blue Fox spinners to them. Silvers are aggressive and when they’re kegged up in pools, we love to experiment with different gear!
